Polyester
Polyester resin, specifically formulated for the manufacture of fibreglass components, possesses good mechanical and thermal properties and is also highly resistant to water and chemicals. It can be divided into three sub-categories, orthophthalic (ORTO), dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and isophthalic (ISO): the former is commonly used for almost all fibreglass sectors; DCPD generally has slightly lower mechanical strengths than orthophthalic but wets the reinforcement fibres better and contains less styrene; on the other hand, isophthalic resin has superior mechanical, thermal and water and chemical resistance characteristics to orthophthalic and DCPD. It is ideal for the construction of artefacts destined for the nautical sector.
